LAST GAME: Birmingham, Ala. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, outlasted the Birmingham Barons on Sunday, winning in extra innings for the first time this year with a 14-12 result. Jackson (32-23) has once again pulled even with Montgomery for the North Division lead with 15 games remaining in the First Half, while Birmingham (21-34) drops further behind the leaders.

TODAY'S PITCHING MATCHUP: After Jackson and Birmingham used 11 combined pitchers on Sunday, starters will be leaned on for length on Monday. Left-hander Bryan Valdez will start game 1 for Jackson and try to keep the ball down. Valdez gave up a pair of homers in his most recent start against Chattanooga, though he was able to complete six innings with the help of nine groundball outs. Birmingham's Jimmy Lambert will start game 1 for the Barons and try to improve upon one of the league's top-3 strikeout rates (28.3%). Game 2 will feature Jackson's Kevin McCanna, who has both started and pitched in relief in the past week. Birmingham's starter for game 2 has not been announced.

SMOLDERING SMITH: Generals first baseman Pavin Smith is the hottest hitter in the Southern League over the last four days (May 30-June 2). The lefty is hitting .667 (12-for-20) with 5 runs, 12 hits, 19 total bases, 4 doubles, a homer, 3 RBI and 2 walks. No other SL player has as many hits or total bases in that span. Smith's surge has raised his year-long batting average from .216 to .261.
