Generals Ftorek sends Inferno Packing

GREENSBORO, NC - Sam Ftorek scored the game-winning overtime goal that would send the Greensboro Coliseum to its feet with a Generals 5-4 victory over the Columbia Infereno. In front of 11,374 on-hand, the Generals scored a late third period goal, and capped the game with a shot from the stick of Ftorek to move four points behind Atlantic City.

The scoring began with a Columbia (38-21-2) goal at the 3:43 mark, coming off the stick of Regan Darby. The Inferno assumed a 2-0 advantage when Chris St. Croix sent home a slap shot. Greensboro (34-18-6) cut into the deficit with Pete Gardiner's 24th goal of the season, making the deficit 2-1 at the end of one. The Generals Kurt Drummond scored the lone goal of the second period, setting the tone for a key third period.

The Inferno began the third period on a power-play goal by Rejean Stringer, assuming a 3-2 lead at the 2:27 mark. The General's Kurt Drummond followed with a score on a shorthanded goal. Under two minutes later Shawn Wansborough converted the Inferno's second power-play goal of the game and made the lead 3-2. Matt Turek scored the game-tying power-play goal with 4:29 remaining in the third. After strong defensive play on both ends, the game went into overtime. Sam Ftorek scored his 28th goal of the season, erupting the crowd for the game deciding goal.

Following a scoreless opening period, Augusta's Phil Roy scored at the 7:22 mark, to make the score 1-0 and break a scoreless streak that of 92:22 between the two teams. The streak began with Sunday's game, a 1-0 shootout loss in Augusta. The Generals Mark Turner knotted the game at 1-1 on a rebound of a Geno Parrish shot. The game-winner came with just five seconds remaining in the second period, when Jay Murphy ushered both teams to the locker rooms by stealing a Lynx clearing attempt and blasting a slap shot past Tom Draper. The Generals Bryan Richardson added an insurance goal at 11:26 in the third for the final difference.

Greensboro returns home on Monday, March 3rd, where they face the Cincinnati Cyclones. Monday will be "Monday Night Football", where Antoine Calloway, Demeco Archangel, and Shannon Gainey of the Greensboro Prowlers will be on-hand to sign autographs for fans. The game will also feature a chance to win Cleveland Brown Offensive Lineman and former North Carolina A&T graduate Qasim Mitchell's autographed football.
