Generals fall 2-1 despite 66 shots on goal

GREENSBORO—The Greensboro Generals netted at least 20 shots in each period of play against the Greenville Grrrowl, and the final tally was in favor of the Grrrowl by a 2-1 margin. In front of 2,648 on-hand at the Greensboro Coliseum, the Generals returned to the friendly confines following a two-week hiatus with the ACC tournaments in town.

In their first game back on home ice since February 28th, the Greensboro Generals managed 20 first period shots on goal, however none tickled the back of net. A penalty free first period for both teams, Greenville netted the only goal when just 1:01 into the frame, Michael Chin scored his 20th goal of the season.

The second period was just as familiar as the first for Greensboro, who this time managed 21 shots on goal, totaling 41 in the contest, however the lead remained 1-0. As for the Grrrowl, who doubled their number of shots on goal in the second period to 12 (18 total). In the frame, each team also received their first penalties, Greenville earning two.

In the third, Greenville would manage their second goal, when from the right face-off circle, Jonathan Zion gave the Grrrowl (13-45-5) a 2-0 advantage at the 12:02 mark of the period. Zion put a pass from Jeremy Kyte past Hodson top shelf, one of only seven shots that Greenville would convert in the frame. Generals (35-26-1) Captain Mark Turner cut the deficit to 2-1 when on a rebound shot by Eric Fortier, he sent the 57th shot of the game past Daniel Bosclair.

After a two game road series at the Florida Everblades, the Generals return on March 22nd at 7 p.m., Greensboro will face-off against the Charlotte Checkers, in a game originally scheduled for February 26th. A divisional match-up that will feature two teams locked in a battle for the final playoff seed in the Southern Division, Greensboro will also have the opportunity to maintain possession of the Carolina Cup. The Carolina Cup is handed out annually to the overall winner of the Greensboro-Charlotte series.
