Montgomery Biscuits News Release
JACKSON, Ten. - Benton Moss (6-5) pitched well, but the Biscuits (69-55) left the bases loaded on three separate occasions, and were blanked on the road for the first time all season, 2-0, by the Jackson Generals (65-58) on Friday night at The Ballpark at Jackson.
Moss entered Friday night with a 19.1 consecutive scoreless inning streak intact, the longest for any pitcher this season, and increased it all the way to 23 by twirling a scoreless first, second, and third.
Jon Duplantier, the Arizona Diamondbacks number one prospect, ran into trouble in the first when the Biscuits loaded the bases with one out for Brett Sullivan. The catcher then lifted a fly ball into medium-deep left that Kevin Medrano caught. Nathan Lukes tried to score from third after the catch, but Medrano gunned him out at the plate for an inning-ending double play.
In the second, the Biscuits loaded the bases against Duplantier with one out again, when a Lukes screamer was caught by Generals third baseman Marty Herum for the second out before Jake Cronenworth bounced out to first to end the threat.
Moss would retire the first two batters of the bottom of the fourth on groundouts, before a jam-job single by Rudy Flores and a base hit by Josh Prince brought Jay Gonzalez to the dish. The left-handed hitter then yanked a two-out, two-run double off the wall in the left to plate the only runs of the ballgame and put Jackson on top, 2-0, snapping Moss' consecutive-scoreless inning streak at 23.
Tyler Mark (2-0) came on for Duplantier in the fifth, and worked 1.2 scoreless innings. Michael Blazek then worked a scoreless seventh, before handing the reigns to Kevin Ginkel for a scoreless eighth.
The Biscuits would mount a comeback against Ginkel in the ninth though, loading the bases with one out for the third time in the game. Mike Brosseau struck out on an elevated fastball for the second out, however, before Brett Sullivan grounded out to the shortstop Galli Cribbs to end the game. The Biscuits left 14 men on base in the defeat.
The loss means that there will be a rubber match in the series finale on Saturday night when J.D. Martin (7-9) squares off against Barry Enright (1-1) at 6:05 PM CT.
The Biscuits return home on Sunday, August 19 for a 10-game homestand to close out the regular season. Montgomery welcomes the Chattanooga Lookouts for five games, which includes Alabama State vs. Tuskegee Night on T-Shirt Thursday on August 23. The Tennessee Smokies come into the Capital City for Troy University and Community Night with MAX Fireworks on August 24.
