Dayton Gems News Release

The Dayton Gems struggled to get shots at the goal on Saturday night during their 4-1 loss to Mississippi.

In the end, it proved to be a deciding factor in the game.

The Gems took just 21 shots on goal while allowing the RiverKings to take 36 shots.

In the second period, Dayton was only able to take three shots at the goal. The three total shots in a period tied a season low for the Gems. The last time Dayton was only able to record three shots on goal during a single period was on Nov. 13 against Evansville.

On the other end of the ice, the RiverKings took shots all night long and were rewarded for their effort. Mississippi scored safely in each period of the game on Saturday night.

The RiverKings were the first to make their way on the scoreboard. Russell Smith scored his fifth goal of the season to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first period.

The Gems didn't wait long to strike back. At the 7:53 mark, Dayton's Matthew Larke scored to tie the game at 1-1.

The RiverKings retook the lead before the end of the period when Andrew Lackner scored the go-ahead head with 3:53 remaining in the period. After that, Mississippi took over for the remainder of the game.

Mississippi scored a single goal in each of the remaining periods. RG Flath scored in the second period and Jeff Christian rounded out the scoring for the RiverKings with a goal in the third period to give Mississippi the 4-1 win.

Dayton will return to the rink on Jan. 28. The Gems will take on Wichita at 7:30 p.m. at Hara Arena.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
