Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder blanked the Missouri Mavericks 4-0 at the INTRUST Bank Arena on Saturday night.
Marc-Antoine Gelinas earned his third shutout of the season, stopping all 16 of the Mavericks' attempts, while four different Thunder players hit the back of the net.
The Thunder led 2-0 after one period, helped by goals from Jesse Bennefield and Andrew Martens. Bennefield drove a perfect feed by Bobby Hughes from behind the net past Missouri goaltender Rob Nolan at 5:44. Martens scored from the point through traffic in front of Nolan with 61 seconds left in the period.
Matt Robinson scored at 6:21 in the second to make it 3-0 Wichita. Aaron Davis forced a turnover in the offensive zone that allowed A.J. Gale to fire on Nolan from the left circle. Robinson backhanded the rebound from the right circle to the long side of the net for the goal. Davis scored shorthanded at 11:09 in the second, taking the puck deep down the right boards before cutting to the net and backhanding the puck behind Nolan.
Strong team defense helped Gelinas stop six of six in the third period to complete the shutout.
Wichita was 0 for 5 on the power play while Missouri was 0 for 3. Nolan took the loss, saving 21 of 25.
The Thunder hosts the Laredo Bucks on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. For tickets, call the arena box office at (316) 755-SEAT or visit the Thunder's official website at www.wichitathunder.com
