Gems drop playoff opener to Rapid City, 5-4

April 1, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release

The Dayton Gems made a big first impression in the CHL Playoffs on Friday night, but in the end, the Rush proved to be too much for the Gems as Rapid City handed Dayton a 5-4 loss in the opening round of the postseason.

Rapid City leads the series 1-0.

It didn't appear as though the Gems were going to come out on the losing end in the first period. Midway through the opening period, Brandon Naurato, Damian Surma and Jonathan Ornelas each scored within a two minute span to give Dayton a 3-0 lead.

After a timeout by the Rush, Dayton was unable to record a goal for the remainder of the period. Rapid City's Les Reaney scored with 2:03 remaining in the period to put the score at 3-1.

The tables turned as Rapid City took over the game in the second period. The Gems were unable to find the back of the net while Rapid City scored four unanswered goals in the second period to give the Rush a 5-3 lead.

The Rush scored three of their four goals on powerplays, including one powerplay goal by Scott Wray with one second remaining in the period.

Nick Canzanello scored for Dayton in the third period to pull the Gems to within one. But that was all the closer the Gems would get as the Rush went on to hand Dayton the 5-4 loss.

The Gems will take on the Rush in Game 2 of the series at 9 p.m. in Rapid City on Saturday.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
