Gateway Avoids Sweep in Series Finale Against Florence
June 17, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
SAUGET, IL - Florence had a chance to sweep its first opponent of the season tonight, but Gateway starter Carson LaRue was the stopper the Grizzlies needed. The righty logged a quality start and his offense gave him plenty of run support in a 9-2 Grizzlies win at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
LaRue allowed just two hits and one walk over his first six innings, including four 1-2-3 frames. He faced only three batters over the minimum over that span. He ran into a little trouble in the seventh with one home run apiece given up to Brennan Price and Ethan Stern before being pulled, but by that time the bats had already given him some breathing room.
Up 1-0 in the fifth inning, Jose Rosario hit an opposite field three-run home run to give Gateway a 4-0 lead. After the back-to-back Y'alls home runs in the seventh, Gateway answered with five of their own in the home half of the inning. Andrew Penner and Isaac Benard hit consecutive home runs to start the inning, then four walks and two hit by pitches resulted in three more runs scoring.
Penner finished with three hits for Gateway (14-16), his second consecutive night with a multi-hit game. Former Florence Freedom outfielder Isaac Benard finished the series with five hits (three home runs) and six RBI. The home run for Rosario broke an 0-18 skid.
Alberti Chavez had two hits for Florence (11-18), and Harrison DiNicola stroked his fourteenth double of the season to maintain his league lead in two-baggers. Yasel Santana - the league's reigning Pitcher of the Week - takes the loss for Florence after four 2/3 innings, three walks, and four runs allowed.
The loss ends a four-game winning streak for the Y'alls and ends a five-game losing skid for the Grizzlies. Florence looks to start a new winning streak with two games coming up this weekend on the road versus Windy City. First pitch tomorrow night, Friday, June 17, is set for 7:05 PM CDT. Jonaiker Villalobos will start for the Y'alls opposed by Sebastian Selway.
