Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
GARY, IN - The Gary Railcats and Sioux Falls Canaries found themselves in a pitcher's duel most of the night, but Gary found just enough offense to earn them a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night.
Sioux Falls starter Ray Hanson and Gary starter Richard Castillo matched each other stride for stride through the first four and a half innings, trading zeros each inning. The Canaries threatened multiple times on the night, stranding twelve runners on base.
The Railcats struck first in the fifth. Andy DeJesus roped a triple to the right field corner, then scampered home on a passed ball to put the first dent on the board as Gary took a 1-0 lead.
Gary added an insurance run in the sixth. Elbert Devarie tripled to right with two away. DeJesus struck again, this time with a perfectly placed safety squeeze bunt up the first base line, allowing Devarie to score from third to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
The Cats found the score column again in the seventh. Chase Harris reached with a one-out single. Harris then advanced all the way to third on a stolen base and a throwing error. Frank Martinez drove in Harris on a sacrifice fly to center to push the Gary lead to 3-0.
The Canaries attempted to mount a comeback in the eighth inning. A single and two walks, all with two away, loaded the bases for Aaron Owen. Unfortunately, Owen struck out swinging as the Birds failed to score. The Birds then hoped to get on the comeback train in the ninth. Ethan Chapman dropped in a one-out single, but Darwin Perez struck out and Blake Schmit flew out to end the game.
The Canaries and Railcats will see each other one final time in Gary on Thursday night before returning home. Kris Regas takes the hill for the Birds on Thursday. The Canaries will return home on Friday as they welcome the Lincoln Saltdogs to The Birdcage for the first and only time this season. Friday will be Girl Scouts Night, as well as the final Friday Night All-Star Fireworks display of the 2016 season.
