Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts trailed 5-0 at one point Wednesday night, but rallied late and completed their comeback victory in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off two-run homer by Zack Cox to beat the Kansas City T-Bones 7-6 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Trailing 5-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Wingnuts (51-31) started to work their way back in it. T.J. Mittelstaedt hit an inside-the-park home run for the second straight day to get the home team started, bringing home three to trim the deficit to two.

The Wingnuts then closed the gap to one in the fifth, as Christian Stringer brought Brennen Salgado home with a sacrifice fly.

Kansas City (38-44) pushed their lead back to two in the sixth, plating an unearned tally to make it 6-4.

Wichita got back within a run in the seventh, as Brent Clevlen hit an RBI single, one of his three hits on the night.

After the unearned run in the sixth, the Wingnuts bullpen kept the T-Bones offense from doing much for the rest of the night, as Chad Nading, Chase Johnson, and Frankie Reed (5-3) all worked scoreless frames to keep Wichita within a run.

The Wingnuts put the tying run at third with two outs in the eighth, but Mark Haynes (3-2) came on to pick up an inning-ending strikeout. The righty stayed in for the ninth, and gave up a lead-off single to Stringer before Cox launched the two-run walk-off shot, giving Wichita their fifth walk-off win of the year, and first walk-off home run of 2016.

In the early going it was all Kansas City, as an RBI double by Brett Wiley in the first and two-run double by Tyler Massey in the second quickly made it 3-0.

The visitors added two more in the fourth, drawing back-to-back bases loaded walks to extend their lead to five.

The Wingnuts and T-Bones wrap-up their four-game series Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Righty Alex Boshers (10-3, 3.34) will be on the hill for Wichita, while Kansas City will counter with fellow right-hander Sean Furney (3-2, 2.81) First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
