CHARLESTON, SC - Christian Garcia struck out 11 batters and Tim Battle conlcuded a brilliant series with three hits and three runs scored as the Charleston RiverDogs charged past the Kannapolis Intimidators, 9-1, in South Atlantic League action Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, Charleston has won five straight overall, eight consecutive home games, and improves to a season-best 12 games over the .500 mark. Additionally, the RiverDogs have won 15 of their last 19 and finish the season series against Kannapolis having taken 11 of the 12 games between the teams.

The win gives the RiverDogs their second consecutive home series sweep and fifth sweep of an opponent this season.

Charleston improves to 66-54 and 28-22 in the second half while the Intimidators fall to 38-80 overall and 18-30 in the second half.

Garcia, who started 20 games for the RiverDogs in 2005, made his '06 Riley Park debut with a bang as he pitched seven complete innings and scattered five hits while fanning a Charleston season-high 11 batters. In the process, he improved his record to 2-1.

Battle led Charleston's 13-hit attack with three, and finished the four-game series with 10 hits in 17 at bats. Reegie Corona, Marcos Vechionacci, Joe Muich and James Cooper each had a pair of knocks.

The RiverDogs hit the scoreboard in the third inning on Battle's RBI single, who then stole second base and moved to third on the first of three errors committed by Kannapolis on the day. Battle scored the hosts' second run when starting pitcher Rafael Flores (3-6) balked him home.

The Intimidators retaliated with a run in the fourth inning when Juan Camacho recorded an RBI groundout to shortstop.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cooper singled home a run to increase the lead to 3-1. The lead was expanded to 5-1 after five innings when Corona hit the first of his two RBI singles and Vechionacci doubled home another.

The RiverDogs measured another two-run inning in the sixth on an Eduardo Nunez RBI single and another run driven in by Corona.

Muich, the RiverDogs' catcher, slammed his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh inning that cleared the left-center field wall, handing Charleston the final lead of 9-1.

Cory Stuart and Abel Gomez preserved the victory for Garcia as each pitched one complete inning without incident.

Catcher Brent Metheny led the Intimidators' offensively with three hits as the visitors collected eight on the afternoon.

After a rare day off Monday, the RiverDogs begin a four-game series at Greenville beginning Tuesday. Charleston manager Pat Roessler has announced that righty Bryan Villalona (8-8, 3.76 ERA) will begin the series while the Drive has yet to announce their starting rotation.
