Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Mat Gamel continued his torrid start to the 2009 season on Friday evening at Greer Stadium, driving in four runs and scored three more during a 4-for-5 effort to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 10-6 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs in the second game of a four-game series.

Gamel, who was named the 2008 Topps Minor League Player of the Year and ranks as the #2 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, has recorded six hits (three for extra bases) in nine at-bats through his first two games for the Sounds.

The visitors got off to a quick start against Sounds starter Mike Burns, plating three first-inning runs. With one out, Alejandro De Aza and Chris Coghlan ripped back-to-back doubles to put the Z's on the board. After a Gaby Sanchez single, Michael Ryan stroked the third double of the frame off Burns to make it a 2-0 game before Brett Hayes concluded the inning's scoring with an RBI groundout.

The Sounds (1-1) responded in the bottom of the opening frame against New Orleans starter Brett Sinkbeil, evening the contest with three runs of their own on a trio of RBI singles off the bats of Gamel, Erick Almonte, and Angel Salome.

Veteran infielder Dave Matranga put the Zephyrs back in front, 4-3, in the second when he led off the inning with a solo homer to left off Burns, his first roundtripper of the year.

Nashville jumped in front in the third with another three-run inning off Sinkbeil. Hernan Iribarren delivered an RBI double sandwiched by a pair of run-scoring groundouts by Almonte and Jason Bourgeois.

The Sounds tacked on three more in the fourth as they chased Sinkbeil from the ballgame and increased their lead to 9-4. Gamel highlighted the frame with a two-run double. The third baseman added an RBI single an inning later.

New Orleans closed out the evening's scoring with a pair of two-out, eighth-inning runs against Sounds reliever Lindsay Gulin.

Gulin (1-0) picked up the win for Nashville after allowing two runs and striking out six batters in four innings of relief behind Burns, who allowed four runs on seven hits in his four-inning outing.

Sinkbeil (0-1) was saddled with the loss after being touched for nine runs on 11 hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work for New Orleans.

The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Saturday evening at Greer. Left-hander Chase Wright makes his Brewers organization debut when he toes the rubber for the Sounds to face Z's right-hander Burke Badenhop. A spectacular fireworks show will follow the game.
