Colorado Springs Win Season Opener, 9-6 Over Las Vegas

April 10, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox opened the 2009 season on Thursday night with a 9-6 victory over the Las Vegas 51s in front of 2,414 fans at Security Service Field.

The cold weather seemed to affect each starting pitcher as both struggled to find their rhythm early in the game. Greg Reynolds started the game for the Sky Sox lasting only 4.1 innings giving up 5 earned runs on 6 hits, while his counterpart Wade Miller (0-1) lasted 4.2 innings allowing six runs, two earned, on two hits and seven walks.

The 51s jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after the third inning but the Sky Sox came from behind by plating at least one run in each of the final five innings with the big blow coming with a four-run fifth. In that inning, Miller walked four batters and designated hitter Kenny Perez delivered the go-ahead hit with a two run single. Perez finished the night going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a walk.

Joel Peralta (1-0) picked up the win for the Sox in relief of Reynolds after working 1.2 scoreless innings. Matt Murton hit his first homer of the season for the Sox, an opposite field shot in the fourth, and Dan Ortmeier went 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI.

Game two of the four-game series tomorrow night will feature RHP Josh Fogg (NR) for the Sox versus RHP Dirk Hayhurst (NR). Game time is set for 6:05 PM MDT.
