Bridgeport Islanders News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Penn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (8-5-0-0), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, went neck-and-neck with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (11-3-1-0) for the better part of 60 minutes on Friday, but suffered a 4-3 setback at Mohegan Sun Arena, snapping the team's two-game winning streak.

Bracken Kearns, Andrew Rowe and Josh Winquist each scored for the Sound Tigers, while Penguins captain Tom Kostopoulos was credited with the game-winning goal early in the third period. Overall, Bridgeport suffered just its second loss on the road (5-2-0-0) and is now 0-2-0-0 against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.

BOX SCORE

Following a scoreless opening frame, both offenses heated up in the second period, scoring five combined goals and leaving Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with a 3-2 advantage after 40 minutes. Oskar Sundqvist broke the ice with an even-strength goal at the 9:20 mark for his sixth tally of the season. From the right circle, the second-year forward snuck a quick shot past Stephon Williams' glove to put the home team out front.

Carter Rowney doubled the Penguins lead just 63 seconds later when he buried his fourth tally of the season. From the slot, Rowney collected a centering feed from Garrett Wilson and bounced a shot off Williams' chest protector, but the rebound caromed right back to Rowney who finished the second chance at 10:23.

Kearns cut Bridgeport's deficit in half at 13:02 of the second period with his team-leading sixth goal of the season. After a low shot from Jon Landry was turned aside, Steve Bernier moved the puck to Kearns at the right post where the veteran forward forced a shot past the glove of goaltender Casey DeSmith.

Just over two minutes later, Jean-Sebastian Dea made it 3-1 with a redirection at the right post for his fifth goal of the season. Rookie forward Jake Guentzel created the opportunity from the left corner by funneling a sharp wrister through traffic to the weak side, where Dea beat Williams' left leg pad at 15:12.

The pendulum continued to swing in the final half minute of the second period when Rowe scored to make it a one-goal deficit yet again. Following slight chaos in front of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's net, Landry and Jesse Graham, in his AHL season debut, teamed up to find Rowe at the left post, where he banked a shot off a Penguin defenseman and in at 19:33.

Kostopoulos netted the eventual game-winning goal at 4:34 of the third period with Williams well out of position. Bridgeport's goaltender shifted out of his crease to play the puck and was nudged off balance by two players tied up at the left post, allowing Kostopoulos to redirect Rowney's centering feed into a wide open net.

Trailing by two, Winquist gave the Sound Tigers renewed life at 14:55 of the third period with his second goal of the season. From the top of the point, Josh Holmstrom hammered a shot on target that was tipped down to the right post by his brother Ben Holmstrom, where Winquist pushed it home for the 4-3 final.

Head coach Brent Thompson elected to pull Williams for the extra attacker with 1:21 left in regulation, but to no avail.

The Sound Tigers finished the game 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and did not have an opportunity on the power play. Williams (2-5-0-0) made 24 saves in the loss, while DeSmith (5-0-0-0) remained undefeated through five starts with 25 stops.

Shots were even 28-28.
