The Manitoba Moose (7-6-0-1) matched up against the Tucson Roadrunners (8-1-2-0) for the first time in both teams' histories Friday night. The Moose got out of the gate with plenty of jump, outshooting the Roadrunners 12-5 in the opening frame. Unfortunately for Manitoba, Tucson goaltender Adin Hill was sharp as well, turning aside all 12 shots. Brendan Lemieux was the only Moose to beat Hill, but his shot rang off the crossbar. At the other end of the ice, Eric Comrie only faced the five offerings while starting his second game in a row. It all added up to a scoreless first period.
The second got off to a feisty start when Darren Kramer and Justin Hache earned five minutes in the penalty box a couple minutes into the period. Just moments later, Scott Kosmachuk was on the receiving end of a boarding minor from Christian Fischer and the two tussled, earning roughing minors. The teams finally broke onto the scoreboard when Tucson scored on the powerplay at 8:46. Brendan Perlini took a pass from Craig Cunningham and one-timed a quick shot past Comrie. The Moose evened the game at 11:21 as Kramer pounced on a redirected Brenden Kichton pass to pot his first of the year. Tucson regained the lead with 1:52 left in the period as Craig Cunningham tipped a Jamie McBain shot for the powerplay goal. Manitoba held a 27-15 edge in shots after forty, but trailed 2-1.
The Moose conjured up another equalizer early in the third. Jimmy Lodge found Darcy Murphy's rebound and popped it past a sprawling Adin Hill to put the score 2-2 at the 4:47 mark. The dangerous Tucson powerplay found success again 6:56 into the period to put the Roadrunners back in front. Right off the draw, McBain's point shot hit Perlini in front and redirected into the goal to make it 3-2. Tucson added insurance with 4:15 left off a Brandon Burlon wrist shot. Burlon then iced the game with 61 seconds left, scoring into an empty net for the 5-2 Tucson victory.
