Macon Mayhem News Release

MACON, GA- Macon Mayhem forward Darren McCormick extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games - an SPHL season-long streak - in the team's 4-1 loss to the Pensacola Ice Flyers on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Pensacola scored first for the second consecutive contest, as SPHL goal-leader Jessyko Bernard scored his 17th goal of the season to give the Ice Flyers the one-goal lead. The Mayhem answered right back, however, as Darren McCormick scored on a beautiful power play sequence. Defenseman Zach Urban and center Jimmy Soper assisted on the power play goal.

No goals were scored by either team in the second period, but Pensacola was able to pull away in the third period. Charlie Adams gave the Ice Flyers the 2-1 lead, assisted by Bernard and Milan. The Mayhem got a chance to tie the game on a power play, but Pensacola was the team that took advantage of the opportunity. After a save by Pensacola goaltender Gordon Defiel, Ken Neil buried on the breakaway to give the Ice Flyers the two-goal lead. Then, right as Rich Ledy exited the penalty box, Kyle Haines scored on another breakaway to take the 4-1 lead. That score would hold for the remainder of the game, giving Pensacola their 21st win of the season.

NOTABLE STATS: Charlie Finn was handed his first regulation loss since November 9th against the Evansville Thunderbolts, as he moves to 7-3-1 on the season. He saved 28 of the 34 shots he faced.

Darren McCormick scored the lone goal for the Mayhem, extending his goal-scoring streak to seven games. His goal-scoring streak is the longest of the season for the Mayhem and the longest in the SPHL this season.

The Mayhem's league-best power play scored on one of their five chances in the game, and the penalty kill was perfect, as Macon killed off all seven of Pensacola's power play chances.

KERR'S COMMENTS: "I thought we battled hard tonight, but that short stretch in the third period is what killed us. When you play a team like Pensacola, you aren't going to get many chances, so you have to take advantage of the chances you get. We didn't do that tonight, and they were able to bury their chances in the third period. That was the difference in the hockey game."

SEASON UPDATE: Macon Mayhem: 16-8-5 (37 points). Pensacola Ice Flyers: 21-6-3 (45 points).

ABOUT THE MACON MAYHEM: The Macon Mayhem is a proud member of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). The team won the President's Cup Championship last season, bringing the city of Macon their first professional hockey championship ever and the city's first professional sports championship since 1962. The team is owned by Bob and Diane Kerzner and managed by Director of Hockey Operations, General Manager, and Head Coach Kevin Kerr, a former third-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres.
