Game Preview: Spirit Host Firebirds in Preseason Action

Saginaw, MI - The defending West Division Champion Saginaw Spirit wrap up the 2019 Preseason schedule with a home-and-home weekend match-up against the in-state rival, Flint Firebirds.

Puck drop from The Dow Event Center on Fri., Sept. 13 is 7:05 p.m. followed by Saturday's match-up from the Flint Iceland Arenas, Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m.

Saginaw went 2-1-0-0 in the Preseason Showcase games in Kitchener, Ontario.  The Spirit outscored their opponents 12-4 in the last two preseason games.

The 2018-19 season proved to be the most successful season in team history for the Saginaw Spirit.  The team clinched the West Division Championship for the second time in team history with a 45-17-3-3 record and their 96 points was second only to the London Knights in the Western Conference.

The Spirit will unveil the West Division Banner before the regular season home opener Saturday, September 21 against the Flint Firebirds.

The Spirit defeated the Firebirds in all eight regular season games en route to their second straight I-75 Divide Trophy.  Saginaw is 15-0-1-0 in the last two seasons against their in-state foes.

Chris Lazary returns for his first full season behind the bench as the Saginaw Spirit head coach.  The Spirit took off last season after Lazary took over as head coach in November. The Spirit finished the year 34-8-2-2, after an 11-9-1-1 start.

2020 NHL Draft top-prospect Cole Perfetti looks to build off an extremely successful rookie season.  The Saginaw Spirit center led the team in goals (37) and points (74) in last year's rookie season.

Perfetti dominated in the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup with seven goals and two assists in five games played for Team Canada before the season.  TSN's Craig Button ranks the Spirit sniper as the third best player available in the 2020 NHL Draft.

2021 NHL Draft goaltending prospect Tristan Lennox returns to the Spirit for his sophomore season.  The 16-year old shined with a 7-2-1-1 record in his rookie season for Saginaw.

Lennox also competed for Team Canada in the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup before the season.  The Spirit netminder went 3-0-0-0 with a shutout and dominated with a .950 save percentage in three games.

Saginaw Spirit 2019 first round pick Connor Punnett joins a stout Spirit defense for his rookie campaign.  The Huntsville, Ontario native scored six goals and 20 assists in his final minor-midget season for the North Central Predators in just 30 games.

The Saginaw Spirit kicks off the 2019-20 regular season on Friday, September 20 on the road against the Kitchener Rangers.  The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. from the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium with pregame coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to puck drop.
