Game Preview: Saints Hit the Road for Weekday Game against Waterloo

February 11, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

Coming off a strong weekend against the Youngstown Phantoms, the Dubuque Fighting Saints will head on the road for their only Tuesday matchup of the year against the Waterloo Black Hawks. Dubuque has widened their lead in second place in the East and are now 10 points up on Team USA, still with a game in hand. Their opponent, Waterloo, still have an 11-point advantage over the second-place team in the West. It will be the sixth matchup of the season between Dubuque and Waterloo.

-The Saints are 7-3 in their last 10 games and won all four games during their four-game homestand. During the home stand, Dubuque outscored their opponents 23-6. The Saints are the third highest scoring team in the USHL and are the only team to allow fewer than 100 goals.

-During the last 14 games, Dubuque has averaged 4.8 goals per game. The offense has rolled since coming back from the winter break and after a few shaky defensive performances, that unit is back to the dominant standard.

-Ty Jackson recorded two points on the weekend to maintain his one-point lead on the USHL charts. Jackson has points in eight straight games, the longest point streak of the season for the Fighting Saints.

-Ty and Dylan Jackson will celebrate their 100th game in the USHL on Tuesday night against Waterloo. The twins will become the second and third players to hit 100 games this season for Dubuque. Aidan Fulp played in his 100th game earlier.

-Riese Gaber recorded three goals on the weekend and now has a comfortable lead at the top of the USHL charts. His 27 goals are four more than the next closest and he is closing in on multiple milestones. With one more goal, Gaber will hit 50 in his USHL career. With seven more goals, he will become the Fighting Saints all-time leading goal scorer. If Gaber can get 11 more this season, he will hold the single season record for most goals in a season for Dubuque.

-The Saints have scored six or more goals in four of the last seven games. During their home winning streak, which is now at six games, they have outscored their opponents 36-10.

-Waterloo continues to roll in the West, with no real threat to their spot atop the conference. The Black Hawks swept the Fargo Force in Waterloo last weekend to once again push their point lead to double digits.

-The Hawks are 2-3 in the season series against the Dubuque Fighting Saints and have lost two straight. They have not won at home yet and in fact, have not been close. Dubuque has outscored Waterloo 15-3 in the two games at Young Arena this season.

-No player is hotter in the league right now than Griffin Ness. Ness has 14 points in the last six games and is just two points behind Xander Lamppa for the team lead. Ness had a four-point night on Saturday against Fargo, his second four-plus point game in the last five contests.

-The game features serious implications in the Dupaco Cowbell Cup standings as well. Right now, the Black Hawks hold a two-point lead on the Fighting Saints. Waterloo has won the last three Dupaco Cowbell Cup trophies.

-Dubuque will be back on their Eastern Conference centric second half after the game against Waterloo. The Saints take on Green Bay at home on Friday and on the road on Saturday.
