Game Preview: February 5 vs Baie-Comeau
February 5, 2022 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
Oh baby we're back! It's so exciting to finally be able to say those words. From the pandemic making another uprise to the snowstorms that seem to be hitting every weekend, it's been a rough month and a half for all Islanders. The black and harvest gold uniforms now shine a light through the blowing snow however as hockey is back, the Islanders are back! Though our midseason opener is not at home, it still feels good to know that the Isles tear through the QMJHL gets to continue. Charlottetown's return to play kicks off this afternoon at 4 pm as the Isles bus swings into Baie-Comeau for a clash with the Drakkar at the Centre Henry-Leonard. So, without further delay, let's dive into our first game preview in 48 days.
The Drakkar struggled to keep their heads above water in the first half currently holding a record of 9-13-4-3. Their record currently has them holding 25 points through their 29 games which has Baie-Comeau sitting in the last available playoff spot at sixteenth in the standings. Leading the way for the Drakkar this season has been twenty-year-old Jacob Gaucher who has potted a career-high 22 goals through Baie-Comeau's 29 games. Gaucher sits just three ginos behind league-leading Islanders forward Patrick Guay. Also worth a look at on the Drakkar is starting goalie Olivier Adam who has a QMJHL best three shutouts this season. Adam also carries an impressive stat-line on an underwhelming Drakkar squad sporting a .912 SV% to go along with a 2.84 GAA. Despite the disappointing first half, this is a team you don't want to sleep on.
Now, a breakdown of our impressive Isles squad! As shown in the story released on the website yesterday, the Isles have players and team stats leading in categories across the league. Patrick Guay has a two-goal cushion as he sits atop the Q in goals scored with 25. Xavier Simoneau leads the league in assists with 33. Noah Laaouan has the best plus-minus across the league sitting at +25, and Jakub Brabenec sits second in rookie scoring with 32 points. After discussing one of the bottom seeds in the league we switch scenarios now as the Isles have been nothing short of electric throughout this season sitting atop the table with 46 points. With a first-half record of 22-7-2-0, the Isles and their league-best 130 goals for will look to kick the second-half off in the same dominant fashion they left on after December 18th.
Today for those who are able to watch will also be a chance to see a few fresh faces in the lineup. Trade deadline acquisitions include Jeremie Biakabutuka, Zachary Roy, Dawson Stairs, Owen Saye, and Francesco Lappena. At least a few of those names if not all will make their Isles debut this afternoon.
Once again action gets underway this afternoon at 4 pm in Baie-Comeau. You can listen to the action live along with Isles fans everywhere as George Matthews and Cory Arsenault give you the play-by-play on Q93 FM or Q93.rocks!
