Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Spinning the Right Direction
Following a tough two game series with the Hudson Valley Renegades, the Aberdeeen IronBirds were victorious over the Lowell Spinners Friday evening. The IronBirds won the game 5-2 after a stellar pitching performance from LHP John Means and a nice night offensively. Means started the game on the mound for the IronBirds as he went five innings, allowed two runs (all earned) and struck out five. The Kansas native dominated the game with his fastball and effectively used his off-speed to get hitters to chase pitches outside of the strike zone. Means was supported by his offense as the IronBirds put up three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning. Austin Anderson, Jamill Moquete and Riley Palmer all scored in the fourth. Jay Gonzalez and Steve Wilkerson scored in the fifth which made it a 5-0 IronBirds lead. Spinners third baseman Jordan Betts shrunk the IronBirds lead as he blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence. Following the home run, the IronBirds still led 5-2.
Pure Domination
The IronBirds Pitching staff came to play Friday night as John Means, Josh Walker and Ivan Hernandez combined for eight strikeouts and a 3.73 ERA. Means tied a personal season high, five innings pitched where he allowed two runs (all earned) off of five hits and struck out five. The only mistake Means had was a grooved fastball that Jordan Betts pounded over the left field fence. With the IronBirds still ahead 5-2 and Means reaching his limit, Josh Walker came on in relief. Walker had his strongest outing of the season as he didn't allow a hit in three innings pitched. The right-hander struck out Spinners second baseman Raymel Flores for his only strikeout of the night. Ivan Hernandez came on to close the game in the ninth as he picked up his fourth save of the season. Hernandez allowed a leadoff walk to Aneudis Peralta but retired the next three hitters allowing the IronBirds to win 5-2.
Success At The Plate
Steve Wilkerson and Tanner Murphy both had a nice night offensively Friday. Wilkerson went 2-4 with an RBI triple (1) in the fifth inning which scored Jay Gonzalez to make it a 4-0 IronBirds lead. Murphy went 2-3 on the night with an RBI single in the fourth inning.
