Lowell Spinners News Release
ABERDEEN, MD. - Jake Drehoff threw seven scoreless innings and Deiner Lopez had an inside-the-park home run as the Lowell Spinners held off a ninth inning rally from the Aberdeen IronBirds to move back to .500 with a 3-2 win Saturday night at Ripken Stadium.
Lowell (33-33) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning in the most unorthodox of ways. Leading off the inning, Deiner Lopez hit a ball down the left field line that got away from Aberdeen left fielder Randolph Gassaway. As Gassaway retrieved the ball, Lopez raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run, giving the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
With the IronBirds going to the bullpen to lead off the eighth inning, the Spinners took advantage of the pitching change. Mike Meyers led off the inning with a single and Mauricio Dubon sacrificed him over. After Aberdeen opted to intentionally walk Jordan Betts, Aneudis Peralta's infield single loaded the bases. Joseph Monge followed with a sharp grounder to second that Hector Veloz couldn't handle, allowing both Meyers and Betts to score to push the Spinners lead to 3-0 before Aberdeen escaped the inning.
Aberdeen (22-44) did not go quietly in the ninth. With All-Star closer Carlos Pinales on for the Spinners, a one-out single by Boston native Jamill Moquete got the IronBirds on the board when Dubon's throw went wide. After a single and a force out, Gassaway singled to score Moquete and bring Aberdeen within a run, but Pinales buckled down to induce a force from Cory Segui to preserve the win.
Drehoff (2-4, 3.88) was phenomenal for the Spinners, allowing just three hits and two walks over a season-best seven scoreless innings, striking out four. Kuehl McEachern pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing a pair of hits while striking out two. Pinales allowed two runs, but ultimately picked up his league-best 15th save of the season.
The Lowell offense had just five hits, but made the most of their opportunities, as Lopez and Peralta each had two-hit games. Lopez's inside-the-park home run was his second home run of the season and the team's second inside-the-park home run, joining Dubon who hit one July 21 at Auburn.
The Spinners look to close out the series with a win with Aaron Wilkerson (4-1, 2.06) getting the ball for a 2:35 first pitch as he enters the game with a 13 inning scoreless streak.
