Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

About Last Night...

Last night's contest between the Hudson Valley Renegades and Aberdeen IronBirds was suspended in the bottom of the fifth with the IronBirds in front, 3-1. The Renegades filed a protest with the New York-Penn League and asked that last night's game be completed to its full nine innings. That protest was denied, and today will be a full nine inning game as the regular season finale. In last night's contest, Steve Clevenger had a big night, going 2-2 with a single, an RBI double, and a run scored. He caught all five innings for Matthew Grimes (2 innings), TJ McFarland (1 inning), and Stefan Crichton (2 innings). Federico Castagnini also had a nice night, with a single, a walk, and two runs scored. McFarland ended up getting the win in relief in his IronBirds debut. Pitching the third inning, he allowed one walk and struck out two as Aberdeen took the lead in the bottom of the third.

Baltimore Birds Join The IronBirds

Steve Clevenger and TJ McFarland were optioned to Aberdeen yesterday in advance of last night's contest. Clevenger played in Aberdeen last season for five games, getting seven hits and an RBI, along with four runs scored. The Baltimore native was acquired by the Orioles last season in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. McFarland was impressive in his IronBirds' debut, pitching one inning. He was acquired by the Orioles in the 2012 Rule 5 draft.

On the Mound This Afternoon...

LHP Brian Gonzalez will get the start for the IronBirds in the regular season finale. In his last start, his first in an Aberdeen uniform, he took the loss against the Hudson Valley Renegades on August 26th. He went five innings plus one batter, allowed four hits and two runs (both earned), striking out six. He did not walk a batter. Gonzalez was drafted by the Orioles in the 3rd round of this year's draft out of Archbishop McCarthy High School in Florida. He made eight starts for the Gulf Coast League Orioles to start his professional career. He did not have a record and pitched 24.2 innings without allowing an earned run. He allowed eleven hits, one unearned run, and eight walks, striking out 25. Gonzalez will be opposed by the Renegades' Chris Pike. Pike is 4-1 on the season with a 2.72 ERA. Against the IronBirds this year, he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. He has pitched 16.2 innings against Aberdeen in 2014, allowing just eight hits and two walks, striking out 12.
