Today's Preview: In the team's first doubleheader of the season, the Kannapolis Intimidators (A, White Sox) play two today against the Augusta GreenJackets (A, Giants) to wrap up this four-game series. With the teams having split the series to this point, the four-game set can still tilt either way. The Intimidators are coming off a 3-2 win on Saturday night after dropping Thursday's series opener 5-1. Kannapolis is now 8-8, fifth in the SAL Northern standings, 1.5 games behind Delmarva, Greensboro and Hagerstown, the three teams tied for first at 10-7. Augusta enters today in first place in the SAL Southern, 1.5 games ahead of Savannah.
Intimidating Starters: Euclides Leyer, 20, looks to bounce back in his fourth start of the year after not making it out of the second inning in his last outing. In his two road starts this season Leyer is 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA (3 ER/11.2 IP) with 10 strikeouts. The White Sox promoted him to Kannapolis from Adv. Rk. Bristol in August 2012 where he made five starts to end the year.
Brandon Brennan, 21, tries to snap a skid of consecutive losses when he faces a Giants farm team for the first time in his career. The White Sox selected him in the 4th round of the June 2012 draft out of Orange Coast College where he dominated going 11-1 record and 1.25 ERA in his final season. In 17.1 innings, he has struck out 15 and walked just three this season.
Augusta's Arms: Joe Biagiani, 22, makes his third start of the season and first at home when he faces a Sox affiliate for the first time. He left his last start in line for a win despite giving up four runs over 5 1/3 innings, but the 'Jackets and RiverDogs April 14 game was suspended in the 13th inning. The Giants drafted Biagiani in the 26th round of the June 2011 draft out of UC-Davis. He made his professional debut in 2012 with Short-Season Salem-Kaizer and Augusta, going 2-8 with a 5.42 ERA, including 0-4 with a 7.41 ERA in nine starts in the SAL.
Jose Reyes, 22, makes his third start and second at home. He's coming off a win in Augusta against Lexington in which he allowed two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings on April 15. He made his professional debut last year with the AZL Giants, going 6-3 with a 4.53 ERA in 16 games (seven starts), striking out 41 over 47.2 innings.
About Last Night: Yoandy Barroso drove in Rangel Ravelo in the top of the ninth to break a tie game and push Kannapolis to a 3-2 in Augusta. Jason Coats led the Intimidators offense, going 2-3 with a run scored. Adam Heisler drove in the game's first run in the top of the year, following a Micah Johnson leadoff triple with an RBI-single. The GreenJackets plated two in the eighth to tie the game as Travious Relaford and Eric Sim each drove in a run. Kannapolis starter Myles Jaye worked seven scoreless innings, leaving in line for a win but taking no decision. Zach Isler (1-0) earned the win despite giving up two runs in the eighth, and Adam Lopez spun a perfect ninth for the save.
Coats Connects: Outfielder Jason Coats went 2-3 on Saturday and has hit safely in eight straight games since April 12, batting .467 (14-30) with two doubles and five RBI in that span. It's tied for the 11th-longest hitting streak in the SAL this season. He has also reached base in all nine road games.
Adam is Aboard: Centerfielder Adam Heisler went 1-4 on Saturday to reach base safely in his last 15 games, tying for the fifth-longest overall streak in the league dating back to last season and tying for the third longest streak of the 2013 season. He is batting .304 (17-56) over his last 15 games and has drawn 11 walks in that time as well, leading to 13 runs scored over that stretch. Only Augusta's Matt Duffy and Hagerstown's Mike McQuillan has a longer on-base streak this season at 16 games.
Myles Ahead: Starter Myles Jaye tossed seven scoreless innings Saturday, his second straight scoreless outing. He left in line for a win but took no decision. Jaye lowered his ERA to 0.72, fourth-best in the SAL. He leads the league with 25.0 innings pitched and is tied for first with three wins. He also leads the league with 96 total batters faced and is tied for first with 83 at-bats against. Jaye last allowed an earned run Opening Day (April 4), a streak of 20 straight innings without an earned run.
Late-Game Heroics: The Intimidators won their third game of the season in their final at-bats with Saturday's win over the GreenJackets. After Augusta tied up the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, Kannapolis responded as Rangel Ravelo singled to open the inning, Jason Coats moved him to second with a sac-bunt, and Yoandy Barroso came through with an RBI-single to put Kannapolis back in the lead. All three wins in the team's final at-bats have come on the road.
Worst if not first: Kannapolis is 8-2 this season when scoring the game's first run, second-best in the SAL with an .800 winning percentage, just behind Hagerstown (9-2). When the Intimidators' opponent scores first, the team is 0-6.
Alive After Five: When leading after five innings, the Intimidators are 7-0 this season. When Kannapolis trails after five innings, the team is 0-8. When tied after five, the team is 1-0.
Micah on the Move: Leadoff man Micah Johnson swiped second base Tuesday against the Shorebirds giving himself a league-leading 12 stolen bases on the season. He is one ahead of Augusta's Jesus Galindo and Lexington's Terrance Gore. Johnson is tied - along with teammate Adam Heisler and two others - for eighth in the SAL with 13 runs scored.
Olacio Improving: Depsite taking a loss in Thursday's game at Augusta, Jefferson Olacio enjoyed his first quality start of the season and third of his career, giving up three runs over 6.0 innings. In 2012 with Advanced Rookie Bristol, Olacio twice logged quality starts, Olacio tossed 6.0 scoreless innings in a win against Johnson City (July 1), and he gave up one run over 6.0 innings in a loss at Kingsport (July 26). After working just 2/3 of an inning in his first start of 2013, he lasted 3 1/3 in his second outing before this quality start at Augusta.
