
Shorebirds Shutout Grasshoppers, 8-0

Salisbury, Md. - Delmarva Shorebirds (11-7) starter Brady Wager tossed six scoreless innings and the offense recorded a season high 15 hits in an 8-0 shutout win over the Greensboro Grasshoppers (10-8) on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds are in sole position of first place heading into a scheduled off day on Monday.
The Shorebirds exploded for four runs on five hits in the first inning. Tucker Nathans hit a one out single to left field. Two batters later, Christian Walker hit a two out double off the base of the right field wall to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. Then, Creede Simpson connected on a two-run home run, his third of the season, to increase the lead to 3-0. Roderick Bernadina dropped a bunt single and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Shorebirds added to the lead in the second. Joel Hutter hit a two out single and Walker blasted a double to right-center field to score Hutter.
In the fourth inning, the Shorebirds tacked on two more runs. Hutter hit a lead off single and Walker drew his team high ninth walk. Then, Simpson hit a deep drive to straight away center field and Juancito Martinez dropped the ball as he approached the wall, allowing both runners to score.
The Shorebirds tacked on another run in the fifth. Gregory Lorenzo doubled and later scored on a hit by Tucker Nathans to the right side and a wild throw by second baseman Anthony Gomez.
Wager (2-1) tossed six strong innings to earn the win. He surrendered just four hits. Between the end of the first inning and end of the fourth inning, he retired ten straight batters. Wager induced 11 groundouts.
The Shorebirds used three pitchers over the next three innings to finish the game. Matt Hobgood pitched a scoreless seventh, Kevin Jacob tossed a scoreless eighth and Matt Price finished the game in the ninth.
Walker and Boss each had three hits to lead the Shorebirds.
The Shorebirds have an off day on Monday before beginning a seven-game road trip on Tuesday, April 23 against the Savannah Sand Gnats.
