Game Notes at Tacoma

August 22, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: Neftali Feliz and the Aces look for a series win tonight in Tacoma. Reno's game-two starter enters tonight's game with a record of 5-4 and an ERA of 4.85. As a starter, Feliz is 4-1 with a 3.50 ERA. Reno is 43-34 all-time against the Rainiers when playing in Washington and won their 100th all-time game last night.

Last Game: Back-and-forth was the theme in game one against the Rainiers. Both pitching staffs held their opponents to zero runs through seven innings of play. Reno jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning with a Yasmany Tomas solo home run. Tomas' homer was his 12th of the season and came with two outs. Tacoma recovered nicely, plating two runs in the bottom half to take the lead. Again, by way of the longball, Kristopher Negron tied things up with a home run in the top of the 9th inning. Tacoma loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning with no outs, but Jimmie Sherfy worked some magic to get out of the jam. Tomas delivered the game-winning run in the 10th, singling home Kevin Cron.

VS. Tacoma: The Aces are 8-6 against Tacoma this season with two games remaining. Reno has been dominant against the Rainiers during their tenure. The Aces are 100-56 all-time against the Mariners top affiliate and have won 43 games in the Pacific North West.

Neftali The Starter: Neftali Feliz has been superb as a starter this season for Reno. Since his first start on July second, Feliz has allowed more than two runs just one time (7/25) over nine starts. As a reliever, Feliz allowed 24 earned runs in 31.2 innings of work compared to 18 earned runs in 46.1 innings as a starter. The first three innings of a Feliz start have mostly all been the same. His ERA in the first/second/third innings is under 2.00. He's allowed six combined runs in 28 innings of work.

Historic: On this date in 2007, in his 4,409th game, Tony La Russa passed Bucky Harris for third place on the all-time list for the total number of contests managed in the major leagues. Only Connie Mack (7,755 games) and John McGraw (4,769) have spent more time in the dugout as a manager than the Cardinals field boss. Tony La Russa joined the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014 as the Chief Baseball Officer. La Russa moved from Chief Baseball Officer to Special Assistant and served in that position until after the 2017 playoffs.

Dingers: Kristopher Negron hit his 15th home run of the season last night. As a member of the Aces, Negron has hit 28 home runs (the highest two-year total in his career). His 15 home runs this year is a new career-high for Negron. He's 28 homers are tied with Nick Evans for 9th all-time in Aces franchise history.

Vargy bein' Vargy: Ildemaro Vargas recorded his 149th, 150th, and 151st hits of the season last night in a 3-for-5 performance. Vargas has posted 150+ hit seasons in each of the last three years. His career-best came in 2016 when he had 160 between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno. His 373 career hits in an Aces uniform are the second best of any Aces player in history, trailing just Cole Gillespie who has 399.
