Game Day Preview: Frontenacs vs. Steelheads
December 12, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Kingston Frontenacs (16-5-3-0) wrap up a three-game-in-three-day stretch today against the Mississauga Steelheads (15-6-1-1) at 2:00 pm, looking to extend an impressive seven-game winning streak that has the Fronts in the top spot in the East Division, tied for the Eastern Conference lead (NB). The Central Division Steelheads sit three points behind Kingston in conference standings. The teams have played four times, each getting five total points on two wins, with the last game being a 5-4 Frontenacs' win on November 28 in Mississauga.
Kingston beat the Niagara IceDogs 6-5 yesterday at Meridian Centre, after a Friday night home win against the Hamilton Bulldogs, gives Kingston a league-high .729 winning percentage and an impressive road record of 7-1-1-0. A fifth consecutive five-or-more goal performance has the team holding the top goals-per-game average in the OHL, eclipsing the 100-goal plateau (104) in Saturday's win. Head Coach Luca Caputi's squad will need it today facing-off against the OHL's best defensive team.
Lucas Edmonds sits second in OHL scoring, collecting 47 points, leading all shooters in points-per-game (1.96). The assistant captain has 23 points (7G, 16A) in his last 10 games leading the Black and Gold offensive attack. Only once in his previous six games has the dynamic forward not registered two assists in a game.
Luca DelBelBelluz leads Mississauga with 30 points and James Hardie (29) leads in goals (16). DelBelBelluz has nine points (4G,5A) against Kingston in the four games. Rookie Owen Beck (21 pts) is third amongst freshmen scorers in the OHL, second in goals (11). Roman Basran is the OHL's leading goalie with a 2.32 goals-against-average as he combines with Steelhead skaters allowing a very impressive league-low 51 goals against in 23 games.
The Steelheads, like Kingston, are riding high, winners of four straight with eight regulation wins in their last 10 games, coming into today off a 9-1 thrashing over Niagara on Friday. Mississauga's last loss came to Kingston on November 28.
