Road Ready
After a sterling start to the postseason in the Rose City, the Winterhawks and their 2-0 series lead now hit the road - or should we say water? - to Victoria for Games 3 and 4 tonight and tomorrow, with a potential Game 5 coming on the road once more on Friday if necessary. A back-and-forth Game 1 gave way to a dominant Portland showing in Game 2, but here's where the rubber meets the road - winning away games is crucial in the playoffs, and the Hawks face their first test tonight.
Oddly enough, Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre was where the Winterhawks found their best fortune against the Royals during the regular season, winning twice in regulation there while needing overtime and a shootout to oust Victoria in two games at the VMC. Can they pick up another key win in hostile territory tonight?
The Usual Suspects
Portland's five leading scorers during the regular season have accounted for eight of the team's nine goals scored this postseason and 19 of the 27 total points accrued by Winterhawks skaters. Nate Danielson (5pts), Luca Cagnoni (4pts), James Stefan (4pts), Gabe Klassen (4pts) and Josh Davies (2pts) picked up right where they left off with dominant efforts across the board last weekend, including back-to-back game-winning goals from Cagnoni after posting the WHL's first 90-point season by a defenseman in 30 years.
The Winterhawks have the high-end talent to go toe-to-toe with any team in the league, but their true strength also lies in their depth. While those five have (somewhat expectedly) thrived in the spotlight, so too have players like Carter Sotheran, Ryan Miller and Josh Mori. And it's only a matter of time before talented scorers like Marcus Nguyen, Diego Buttazzoni, Jack O'Brien and more begin to find the scoresheet with regularity. So keep an eye on the Hawks' stars, sure, but in a tough road test like tonight, it could well be another hero stepping up for the visitors in their quest for a series stranglehold.
