Flint Firebirds News Release
GAME 29 - Firebirds at Sting
Progressive Auto Sales Arena
Sarnia, Ontario
7:05 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Evan Konyen scored in the second period but the Firebirds could not erase a three-goal first-period deficit as they were beaten by the North Bay Battalion, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at North Bay Memorial Gardens.
SNAPPING A DROUGHT: Evan Konyen's goal in the second period on Sunday snapped a 16-game goal-scoring drought for the overage winger. Konyen's last goal had come on October 25 in a 7-2 win over the Guelph Storm. He now has six goals and nine assists in 28 games on the season. Konyen is tied for the team lead in shots on goals with 81.
SHOOK OFF A SLOW START: Second-year winger Jeremy Martin assisted on Evan Konyen's goal in the loss to North Bay on Sunday and now has points in six of his last eight games. Martin opened the season with one goal and one assist in his first 20 games and now has three goals and three assists in his last eight. The NHL Draft eligible winger was given a W rating by NHL Central Scouting in their preliminary 2025 NHL Draft rankings on October 23, which equates to a possible sixth or seventh round pick. Martin had one goal in nine games when that list was released.
SARNIA'S STRUGGLES: Since a shootout win over the Firebirds improved their record to 6-2-1-3 on October 23, the Sting have played 18 games and gone just 2-15-1-1. Sarnia has earned six points during that 49-day period and has fallen from a tie for second in the Western Conference to eighth. The Sting average 2.55 goals per game and 4.19 goals against per game, both 19th in the OHL.
ALMOST HOME: The Firebirds are playing their fifth consecutive game on the road on Wednesday night. Flint has gone 1-2-1-0 thus far in the road stretch. After Wednesday night's game in Sarnia, the Birds will play four of the next five at home.
ODDS AND ENDS: Wednesday is the third of four games Flint will play in Sarnia this season. The Firebirds are 0-1-0-1 at Progressive Auto Sales Arena in 2024-25...Flint held North Bay to one shot on goal in the third period on Sunday. It was the second consecutive game the Birds had allowed just one shot in the third...the Firebirds are 1-for-15 on the power play in their last three games and Sarnia is 1-for-12 on the power play in its last three.
