Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Fighting Saints eight-game home winning streak came to an end against the only team that has defeated them at the Mystique Community Ice Center this season. The Green Bay Gamblers grabbed their second victory in Dubuque of the season with a 3-2 win on Wednesday night.
Cody Bradley tallied his first Fighting Saints goal midway through the first period. Ryan Siiro and Kevin Morris worked the puck to the net, and Bradley cleaned up a rebound to give the Fighting Saints a 1-0 lead. Late in the period, it seemed that the Fighting Saints could extend that lead, benefiting from a powerplay opportunity. As the man advantage got underway, however, the Fighting Saints were assessed a bench minor that negated the powerplay. Andy Welinski scored an unassisted goal on the ensuing four-on-four to tie the game as the teams headed to the second period.
Zach Diamantoni, playing in his first Fighting Saints game as an affiliate list player, scored an unassisted goal just over six minutes into the second period, stuffing a puck just inside the goalpost of the Gambler net. The Gamblers managed to tie the game late in the period, however. Alex Kile and and Kyle Novak worked a puck to the front of the net, where Sheldon Dries beat Matt Morris to knot the game as the two teams headed into the third period.
Alex Broadhurst, who had many offensive opportunities throughout the game, had his persistence rewarded in the third period when he scored a goal to give the Gamblers their first lead of the night. Despite a TJ Moor redirection in the final minute that drew iron and nearly tied the game, Broadhurst's goal held up and gave Green Bay the 3-2 win.
The Fighting Saints will continue their stretch of three home games in four days on Friday and Saturday against Sioux Falls and Fargo. Both games will start at 6:05 p.m. The Fighting Saints homestand of six games will close on Friday, January 6, when the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders travel to the Key City.
