State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Dan Gamache smashed the sixth grand slam in State College Spikes history in the third inning, which proved to be the crowning blow as the Spikes chopped down the Williamsport Crosscutters, 12-1, on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Gamache's slam off on the first pitch he saw from Williamsport reliever Cody Fick enabled him to join Miles Durham, Calvin Anderson, Kyle Morgan, Chase Lyles and teammate Alex Dickerson in State College's (26-41) grand slam club. The blast was also Gamache's first home run as a professional, and made it 11-1, Spikes at the end of three innings.
State College came out roaring from the beginning against Crosscutters starter Michael Nesseth (3-5), with Wes Freeman, Alex Fuselier and Dickerson collecting three straight hits to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Dickerson's hit was a double that brought in both baserunners to make it 2-1, Spikes. Gamache then reached base on a one-out error, and after a Chris Lashmet single loaded the bases, Taylor Lewis's RBI groundout scored Dickerson for the third State College run. A wild pitch then brought Gamache in for the final run of the first.
The Spikes were not done, however, as Freeman's run-scoring triple and Fuselier's RBI single notched two more runs in the second inning and chased Nesseth from the game. In the third, Kirk Singer singled and Matt Skirving walked for the second time to lead off the frame. Dickerson then walked with two outs to load the bases, and Rodarrick Jones drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-1, Spikes before Gamache's slam.
Freeman completed the scoring in the seventh inning with an RBI double. The left fielder ended the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Fuselier added the other multi-hit peformance for the Spikes, going 2-for-5.
Nick Kingham (5-2) earned the victory for the Spikes. Kingham made his tenth consecutive start in which he allowed one or no runs while going at least five innings on the mound. The right-hander yielded the Crosscutters' only run on a total of five hits and a walk while striking out two over five frames on the hill.
2010 second-round draft pick Stetson Allie also appeared in the game for State College, recording a flyout and a strikeout before being lifted after issuing three consecutive walks and delivering a wild pitch.
Nesseth, who came into the game with the sixth-best earned run average in the New York-Penn League at 2.47, allowed six runs (four earned) in an inning-plus of work. The right-hander gave up a total of five hits and a walk while striking out two batters.
Aaron Altherr produced the only run for the Crosscutters when he tripled in Pete Lavin in the first inning. Kyrell Hudson went 2-for-3 at the plate for Williamsport's only multi-hit game.
Sunday, the Spikes and Crosscutters finish their three-game series with a 6:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send right-hander Trent Stevenson (0-3) to the mound, while Williamsport responds with right-hander Perci Garner (1-1).
