Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves took the rubber contest of their three game set against the Norfolk Tides, 8-3, on Wednesday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The G-Braves bats broke out the second 8 run night in the series, blowing by their division foes for the series clincher. The Gwinnett Braves (4-3) are tied with Durham in second place in the International League South division at 1.0 game back of the Charlotte Knights, while the Tides (1-6) are in fourth place at 4.0 games out.
It Was Over When: With the G-Braves clinging to a one run lead in the bottom of the 4th inning, the first three batters of the frame all singled (Ed Lucas, Joe Mather and Diory Hernandez). Daniel Nelson then crushed a ball into the opposing bullpen for his second homer in four games to clear the bases on a three run round-tripper and a 7-2 lead that would turn into a victory.
Braves Beat: On the Mound: LHP Rodrigo Lopez (2-0) went 7.2 IP to earn the win, the longest outing of a G-Braves starter this season. He allowed 5 hits, 2 runs with only 1 earned and walked only 1 against 5 strikeouts.
At the plate: Nelson (2B) finished 1-for-3 with a HR and 3 RBI, while
Hernandez (SS) had a 3-for-4 night (most hits in a game by a player this season) with 3 RBI. Lucas (SS), Mather (RF) and Jose Constanza all ended up with 2 hits apiece and extended their hitting streaks to 6 games all. Designated hitter Mauro Gomez had a 1-for-4 night with an RBI, also putting his hit streak at 6 contests.
The Opposition: On the Mound: Norfolk RHP Ryan Drese (0-1) went 5.0 IP, allowing 10 hits, 8 R/ER, 3 walks, 1 strikeout and a homer.
At the Plate: Third baseman Josh Bell went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI to pace the Tides in defeat.
On Deck: The G-Braves begin a two game set against the Charlotte Knights at 7:05 p.m at Coolray Field. Gwinnett sends out top Braves prospect RHP Julio Teheran (0-0, 1.59 ERA) to face off against RHP Jeff Marquez (1-0, 0.00 ERA). The game can be heard on the home of the G-Braves, WDUN 550 AM/102.9 FM.
Etc: Every Thursday home game is $3 Thursday, as fans can give their wallet even more of a break at the already family and budget friendly games at Coolray Field. Patrons can purchase beverage and food specials selected each game day from protable carts on the concourse for only $3.
