G-Braves Walk Past Rays

Mississippi Braves News Release

GREENVILLE, SC -- The two Southern League teams least likely to turn in a pitchers duel did so Friday night as the Greenville Braves beat the Orlando Rays 1-0 at Municipal Stadium with the only run of the game scoring on a two-out walk in the bottom of the ninth inning. Despite the fact that the Rays came into the game with the league's highest team ERA of 4.10, and the G-Braves were slightly better at 4.03, both teams' starters left without allowing a run. Greenville starter Matt Belisle scattered nine hits over seven innings while Orlando's John Switzer did not allow a G-Brave past second base over eight innings of four hit ball.

Rays reliever Dan Guillory (1-2) came in to pitch the ninth and got two quick outs. But, Ryan Langerhans drew the first walk of the game for the home team, and advanced to second when Bryon Jeffcoat was hit by a pitch. Cory Aldridge followed with a four-pitch walk to load the bases, and pinch hitter Jason Fitzgerald took the 3-1 offering from Guillory outside to get the game's only RBI.

The Rays had at least one hit in every inning, but could not capitalize as 11 men were stranded on base, including two in the ninth. G-Braves reliever Roman Colon (10-3) allowed a pair of singles to lead off the final frame to Jonny Gomes and Heath Kelly, and they were moved over to second and third on a Dan Massiette sacrifice bunt. But, Dan Dement grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
