G-Braves Walk Away with Win

Orlando Rays News Release

Greenville, S.C.— Pinch-hitter Jason Fitzgerald drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Greenville Braves to a 1-0 win over the Orlando Rays at Greenville Municipal Stadium Friday.

The Braves managed to load the bases in the ninth despite not picking up a single hit. When Fitzgerald came to the plate as a pinch hitter for J.C. Boscan, the Braves had Ryan Langerhans on third, Bryan Jeffcoat on second and Cory Aldridge on first. Langerhans had reached on a walk, Jeffcoat was hit by a pitch and Aldridge was intentionally walked. Fitzgerald coaxed a 3-1 walk out of Rays reliever Dan Guillory (1-2), who started the ninth with two quick outs but suddenly couldn't find the plate.

The loss wasted a stellar pitching performance from starter Jon Switzer, who tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits and no walks, striking out five. Offensively the Rays pounded out 12 hits on the night but their inability to cash in any of their numerous base runners ultimately cost them the game. Orlando left 11 on base in the loss, which dropped the Rays to 8-19 on the second half of the season and 40-56 overall.

Jesus Feliciano and Amado German each went 3-4 in the loss, while Danny Massiatte contributed a 2-3 effort on the night, with Massiatte and German each adding doubles.

The Rays and G-Braves continue their four-game series tomorrow at 7:15, with RHP Jose Veras (4-8, 3.81) going for Orlando, while Greenville counters with left-hander Chris Waters (3-3, 3.62).
