Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE, SC -- The Greenville Braves came up a hit short of overcoming a nine run deficit as the Jacksonville Suns held on to defeat the G-Braves 9-8 Thursday night at Greenville Municipal Stadium. The Suns held a 9-0 lead after the top of the sixth inning, but Greenville scored eight runs on 10 hits to get within one. Bill McCarthy would be stranded 90 feet away to end the rally.
The Suns jumped on starter Chris Water (3-4) for a pair of first inning runs. Jason Repko got aboard with a bunt and went to third on a Reggie Abercrombie double to left. Nick Alvarez picked up the first RBI with a groundout, and Abercrombie made it home on a wild pitch.
Jacksonville tacked on an unearned run in the second frame, and erupted for four more runs in the third to make it 7-0 and end Waters' night. The Suns racked up eight hits over the two innings, including an RBI triple from Abercrombie and a towering solo homerun by Nick Alvarez.
The Greenville lumber awoke from its five-inning slumber to score three runs against starter Heath Totten (7-9) in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Suns had already scored two of their own in the top of the inning. Charles Thomas led off with a booming triple off the left field signage and scored on a James Jurries pop-up to right that Abercrombie dropped. Jason Fitzgerald then picked up his first hit of the night, an infield single. McCarthy knocked in his 46th RBI of the season with a shot up the middle, and Richard Lewis capped off the outburst with a single to right that brought in Fitzgerald.
The G-Braves added two more tallies in the seventh highlighted by Fitzgerald's two-out, two-run double.
Greenville made it very interesting with another two spot in the eighth on three singles in a row from Bryce Terveen, Bryon Jeffcoat, and Thomas. But, with one out and two runners on, reliever Jason Frasor struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
The amazing comeback continued in the ninth as Cory Aldridge unloaded on a first pitch fastball to make it 9-8. McCarthy drew a four pitch walk and made it all the way to third with two-outs, but Terveen grounded out to end the madness.
