Mobile BayBears News Release
Jackson, Tenn. â The Mobile BayBears offense came to life Thursday night as they ended a three-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. BayBears starter Cory Stewart picked up the win with six solid innings of work.
Stewart (10-5) allowed just one run and four hits while striking out four batters. With those four punch-outs, the left-hander took over the Southern League lead in the category with 119 on the season. Stewart also became the first BayBears pitcher to compile 10 wins since their 1999 season.
The BayBears scored first in the first, as they have done all season. Mobile leads the league with 75 first inning runs. Bobby Scales beat out a bunt hit and Jon Knott hit his 21st homerun of the season, a two-run shot scoring Scales.
"The pitch was a cutter on the inside half of the plate," Knott said. "It was nice to get it."
The homer was Jon's first since June 24th, though he is still tied for the league lead with Tennessee's Bucky Jacobsen, who also homered Thursday night.
"Everybody's been teasing me, saying that Bucky hit one and he was going to pass me," Knott said. "He beat me in the (homerun) derby, so I would like to take this."
Mobile sent eight batters to the plate in the third, scoring four runs, all after two out. Danny Bravo started the action as he doubled in Scales and Rico Washington. Jake Gautreau followed with an RBI double of his own and scored on a single by Humberto Quintero. After three frames the BayBears led 6-0.
Stewart gave up his only run in the bottom of the sixth. The Diamond Jaxx strung together three straight singles, followed by a sacrifice fly by Matt Creighton.
The BayBears scored their final run in the top of the eighth as Freddy Guzman drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Gautreau.
Ray Sadler drove in Brendan Harris with a single for West Tenn's final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth off of BayBears reliever J.J. Trujillo.
With the win the BayBears are now just one-half game out of first place in the West Division of the Southern League.
The BayBears will conclude their series with the Diamond Jaxx Friday night at 7:05. RHP Chris Oxspring (7-3; 3.33) will get the start on the hill for Mobile.
