G-Braves Stay Hot at the Plate, Beat Buffalo 7-2

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves beat the Buffalo Bisons 7-2 in their series opener on Monday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The G-Braves (33-38) put a 7 spot on the board for a second consecutive game, taking the first meeting of the year against the Bisons (36-35). Gwinnett remains 9.5 games back in 3rd place in the International League South, trailing division leader Durham. Buffalo remains 4.5 games behind Syracuse in 3rd place in the North division.

It Was Over When: Gwinnett got its 2-in-1 again. For the second game in a row, the G-Braves kicked the game off with 2 runs in the 1st inning and rolled from there.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: G-Braves starter, RHP Tim Gustafson (7-4), went 6.0 IP to earn the win, allowing 5 hits and just 1 R/ER while striking out 2 and walking four. RHP Jeff Lyman, who went 1.0 IP of scoreless relief, left the game after walking Buffalo's Mike Jacobs in the top of the 8th with an apparent right arm injury. RHP Stephen Marek earned his 4th save of the year.

At the plate: First baseman Freddie Freeman extended his season-long hitting streak to 10 games, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. He was one of 4 G-Braves with 2 hits, led by second baseman Joe Thurston, who went 2-for-3 with another 2 RBI. Third baseman Wes Timmons and left fielder Matt Young also chipped in with a pair of hits.

The opposition:

On the Mound: Buffalo starter, RHP Dylan Owen (3-3), went 5.0 IP and allowed 6 R/ER on 9 hits.

At the plate: First baseman Mike Jacobs went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while left fielder Lucas Duda finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

On Deck: Gwinnett continues its four-game series against the Buffalo Bisons (New York Mets), the team's only visit to Coolray Field this season, Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. The G-Braves will send LHP Jo-Jo Reyes (1-4, 4.23 ERA) to the hill against LHP Pat Misch (5-3, 3.50 ERA) for the Bisons. The game will be broadcast on TV on CSS, while the radio broadcast will be on WDUN-550 AM.
