
G-Braves Split Twin Bill; Lead Wild Card by 0.5 Games

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves split the doubleheader against the Norfolk Tides on Wednesday evening at Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. The G-Braves defeated the Tides 11-2 in the resumption of a game suspended on 7/25 due to rain. The G-Braves then lost a 7-inning contest by a score of 2-1 to the Tides. The G-Braves (76-63) pick up a half game in the International League South division standings and now trail the Durham Bulls (78-59) by 3.0 games for the division lead. With the split, the G-Braves are now in the lead for IL Wild Card above the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (76-64), who lost to the SWB Yankees 6-2 on Wednesday night.
Game One: It Was Over When: In the top of the 7th in a 2-2 game, 1B Mauro Gomez broke the game open with a bases clearing triple to put the G-Braves on top 5-2.
Braves Beat: On the Mound: While RHP Erik Cordier started the game for the Braves way back on 7/25, he did not throw one pitch on Wednesday night. RHP Peter Moylan resumed the game for the G-Braves in the 5th inning. The Aussie went an inning with a BB. RHP Jaye Chapman followed the man from Down Under and earned his second win of the year, tossing 1.0 IP allowing a R/ER on a H with a BB and 3 K's. RHP J.J. Hoover relieved Chapman and tossed 1.0 IP with a BB and a K. LHP Dustin Richardson was the final G-Braves pitcher in game one. The former Texas Tech Red Raider went 2.0 IP allowing 2 BB and struck out two. At the plate: Gomez had a monster game for the G-Braves, breaking the G-Braves single game RBI record with 8 in the game. Gomez finished off the game going 4-for-5 with 3 R, 8 RBI, 3B, 2 HR, one of which was a grand slam. LF-2B Matt Young also had a great game going 3-for-3 with 2 R, and 3 BB. 3B-SS Brandon Hicks had the other Braves blast, a solo shot in the 6-run 7th inning. He finished the game going 1-for-5 with the HR.
The Opposition: On the Mound: RHP Chris Tillman, who started the game on 7/25, did not throw a pitch on Wednesday night. He finished the game throwing 4.1 IP allowing a R/ER on 4 H with a BB, 2 K's and one HR allowed. LHP Cole McCurry earned the loss going 2.2 IP allowing 6 R/ER on 8 H with a BB, a K and a HR allowed. LHP Nick Bierbrodt relieved McCurry, but did not fare much better. Bierbrodt went an inning allowing 4 R/ER on 2 H with 3 BB, a K and a HR allowed. LHP Clay Rapada finished the game for the Tides and went an inning allowing 2 H. At the Plate: The Tides were held two only two runs and 4 H in the game. Only a single hit and one of the two Tides runs came on Wednesday night. Two out of the four players who had a hit in the game are no longer on the Tides roster. CF Felix Pie scored the second run of the game, going 0-for-1 with a BB.
Game Two: It Was Over When: DH Rhyne Hughes hit his 14th HR of the season in bottom of the first inning off of RHP Steven Shell, giving the Tides a 2-0 lead.
Braves Beat: On the Mound: RHP Steven Shell started the game for the Braves and went 4.0 IP allowing 2 R/ER on 2 H with a BB, 2 K's and a HR allowed. He earned his 5th loss of the season. RHP Cory Gearrin relieved Shell in the 5th inning and tossed 2.0 IP allowing 2 H with 2 BB and 3 K's. At the plate: It was light and day when you compare the first and second games for the G-Braves offense. The G-Braves only managed to put up a single run on 4 H in game two, compared to 11 runs on 16 H in game one. While Gomez's hitting streak came to a halt in game two, he still managed to produce with an RBI sac fly with the bases loaded in the top of the third inning. The reigning player of the week finished the game going 0-for-3 with a SAC, SF and an RBI. LF Matt Young was perfect in the game going 2-for-2 with a BB and a SB. 3B Diory Hernandez scored the G-Braves lone run in the third inning. Hernandez went 1-for-3 with the R in the game.
The Opposition: On the Mound: RHP Ryohei Tanaka started game two for the Tides. Tanaka earned the win going 6.0 IP allowing 1 R/ER on 4 H with a BB and 3 K's. RHP Mark Worrell earned his 21st save of the season closing the game. He went 1.0 IP with 0 BB and 0 K's. At the Plate: Hughes monster shot in the first inning was all the Tides needed to earn the victory. Hughes finished the game going 2-for-3 with a R, 2 RBI, and the HR. CF Kyle Hudson scored the other Tides run. Hudson finished the game going 1-for-2 with a BB and stole two bases.
On Deck: The Gwinnett Braves finish their quick series against the Tides on Thursday night in Norfolk, VA at 7:15pm. Newly named IL Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Pitcher of the IL RHP Julio Teheran (15-2, 2.22) is set to take the hill for the Braves against LHP Chris George (6-5, 4.27) for the Tides.
