Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - After falling 11-2 to Charlotte on Saturday night, the Gwinnett Braves evened the score and earned a series split with a 6-2 victory over the Knights on Sunday at Coolray Field. Right-hander Jair Jurrjens was the story of the game, working eight solid innings for the win. A three-run first inning gave Jurrjens all the support he'd need to defeat the Knights.
Jurrjens (W, 1-0) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three hitters while walking just one en route to his first victory with Gwinnett this season. All the damage off the right-hander occurred in the second inning, and he shut down the Charlotte hitting for the next six frames. Jurrjens finished with 95 pitches, 61 for strikes.
After allowing three early runs to the Knights in the previous night's loss, the G-Braves returned the favor with a three-run first inning. Jose Constanza led off the game with a double, then came around to score on Stefan Gartrell's RBI single. With the run driven in, Gartrell extended his RBI streak to five games.
Immediately following the Gartrell hit, Ernesto Mejia deposited his fourth home run of the season to straightaway center. The two-run blast off Knights' right-hander Terry Doyle gave the G-Braves a 3-0 lead heading to the top of the second inning.
The Knights answered right back with two runs of their own in the next frame, getting an RBI double from Jim Gallagher and trimming the Gwinnett lead to one on an RBI single by Ozzie Martinez. However, that would be all the damage they'd do on the day.
Gwinnett boosted their lead with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth. Christian Marrero singled home an insurance run past the drawn-in infield in the eighth, and later scored on the back end of a double-steal to raise the lead to 6-2.
Right-hander Cory Gearrin worked a scoreless ninth inning for the G-Braves, striking out two out two of the four batters he faced.
Doyle (L, 1-3) allowed three runs on five hits over 6.0 innings for Charlotte. Right-hander Jhon Carlos Marinez yielded three more runs, two earned, over 1.1 innings.
Mejia led the way for the Gwinnett offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
The Gwinnett Braves (19-10) host the Buffalo Bisons (17-13) for the start of a four-game series at Coolray Field on Monday. G-Braves right-hander Julio Teheran (2-1, 3.66) will oppose Buffalo righty Matt Harvey (2-1, 4.80) in a duel of top prospects, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Listen to the broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
Monday is "Kids Eat Free Monday" where all kids 12 and under will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, bag of chips and a small soda.
