The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost their fifth straight game with an 11-2 defeat to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Sunday afternoon. The IronPigs scored in seven of the eight innings and never relinquished the lead. The game was the final contest of a six-game road trip.

Lehigh Valley (17-12) hit early and often against Syracuse left-hander John Lannan, starting from the very first batter. Andres Blanco led off the game with a walk and Kevin Frandsen followed with a single. After a groundout, Hector Luna singled to center field, scoring both runners to give the IronPigs a 2-0 lead.

Blanco added another two runs in the second inning with a two-run home run to left-center field. The shortstop, who was with the Nationals in spring training, had two hits and a walk in the game.

After a scoreless third inning, Lehigh Valley added single runs in each of the next three frames. Starting pitcher Scott Elarton led the charge with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, putting the IronPigs on top 5-0. In the fifth, Cody Overbeck doubled in Luna for Lehigh Valley's sixth run. Right-hander Erik Arnesen relieved Lannan in the sixth, but he also allowed a run when Frandsen singled in pinch-hitter Scott Podsednik.

Syracuse (10-20) scored its only two runs with a seventh-inning rally against IronPigs relief pitcher Tyson Brummett. Mark Teahen led off the inning with a single, and Jarrett Hoffpauir followed with a single of his own. Xavier Paul then lined a double over the head of left fielder Michael Spidale, scoring Teahen for the Chiefs' first run. Jeff Howell added an RBI groundout two batters later, making the score 7-2.

But Lehigh Valley would answer with three runs in the seventh against left-hander Cory VanAllen and an eighth-inning run against Josh Wilkie to close out the ball game.

The Chiefs return home on Monday at 7:00 for the start of an eight-game home stand. Syracuse will face the Durham Bulls, with left-hander Zach Duke scheduled to start against Bulls right-hander Jim Paduch. The brand-new digital scoreboard at Alliance Bank Stadium will also be unveiled for the game.
