Charlotte Knights News Release
(Lawrenceville, GA) - A day after scoring 11 runs on 10 hits, the Knights found themselves facing a former Major League All-Star on the mound in Georgia on Sunday.
Jair Jurrjens, who posted a 0-2 mark with a 9.37 ERA in four starts for the Atlanta Braves earlier this season, tossed eight good innings on Sunday and the Gwinnett Braves earned a series split against the Charlotte Knights with a 6-2 win from Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA.
In his second start with Gwinnett since his demotion from Atlanta, Jurrjens (1-0, 1.80) allowed two runs on five hits over eight innings to earn the win. He walked one and struck-out three batters. Last season, Jurrjens was a National League All-Star and won 13 games for the Braves. Now, he's trying to regain that form.
Gwinnett (19-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Charlotte starter Terry Doyle (1-3, 4.19). Doyle allowed an RBI single to former Knights outfielder Stefan Gartrell and then a two-run home run to Ernesto Mejia in the inning. The home run was Mejia's fourth of the season.
Charlotte (15-15) came back to score two runs in the second inning and trailed at that point 3-2. An RBI double by Jim Gallagher put the Knights on the scoreboard and three batters later, Ozzie Martinez hit an RBI single.
The game stayed that way until the seventh inning when the G-Braves tacked on to their lead. Gwinnett scored a run in the seventh inning and two runs in the eighth, which made it a 6-2 ballgame.
In all, Doyle went six innings for the fifth-straight time this season. He allowed three runs on six hits and was saddled with his third loss of the year.
Charlotte concluded their 13-game road trip by going 5-7. They still have one more game to finish on the road trip - but it won't take place on the road. Friday's suspended game from Allentown, PA against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs will be completed at Knights Stadium later this month.
The Knights will now return home to Knights Stadium and open an eight game homestand on Monday, May 7. Single-game tickets for all games on the upcoming homestand are available at the Knights Ticket Office located at Knights Stadium, online at www.charlotteknights.com or by phone at 704-357-8071 (North Carolina) or 803-548-8050.
