he Gwinnett Braves fell to the Norfolk Tides 5-2 on Tuesday night in Norfolk, VA. With the loss, Gwinnett (69-68) was eliminated from the International League playoffs.
It Was Over When: The Tides jumped to an early lead in the 2nd inning when Brandon Snyder hit a two-run homer off Jose Ortegano. Defensive miscues by the Braves allowed Norfolk to score another run in the sixth. Norfolk would tack on two more runs in the seventh, putting the Braves in a five run deficit they would not overcome.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Jose Ortegano (3-10) was tabbed with the loss after giving up 3R (2ER), three hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. In relief Vladimir Nunez gave up 2R/ER in 1.1 IP. Lee Hyde pitched a scoreless eighth inning, giving up only one hit.
At the plate: Joe Thurston went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the eighth inning. In his Gwinnett debut, Antoan Richardson also finished 2-for-4.
The opposition:
On the Mound: Norfolk starting pitcher Chris Tillman (11-7) held the G-Braves scoreless through 6.2 innings, striking out three and allowing five hits. Armando Gabino gave up 2R/ER while Dennis Sarfate earned his 19th save of the season.
At the plate: Snyder was 2-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBI. Jeff Salazar and Paco Figueroa each had an RBI for the Tides.
On Deck: Gwinnett will play the second game of a short two game series in Norfolk at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The G-Braves will send RHP Erik Cordier to the mound for his Triple-A debut against RHP Tim Bascom for the Tides. The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.
