Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves dropped a tight 2-1 affair against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Saturday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Gwinnett (25-30) got a strong start from ace Chris Resop, but it wasn't enough as the Yanks (32-24) rallied late for the victory. The G-Braves are now 7.5 games behind Durham in the International League South, while the Yankees are 0.5 games behind IL North-leading Syracuse in second place.

It Was Over When: Resop cruised through his first six innings, but a mistake to Yankees DH David Winfree, after a leadoff double, ended up over the centerfield wall in the 7th for a 2-1 SWB lead. The Yanks held on for the win.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: RHP Resop (4-2) finished with 6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 5 K and a HR. He also threw a career-high 106 pitches in his outing.

At the plate: Freddie Freeman made his return to the lineup in style after missing 7 games with a strained right knee. Starting at DH, Freeman went 1-for-2 with an RBI and 3 walks. SS Brandon Hicks went 2-for-3 while J.C. Boscan was 2-for-4 in the 8th and 9th spots in the batting order, respectively.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: RHP Ivan Nova (3-2) settled down after a bit of a shaky start, finishing with 6.0 IP and allowing just 1 R/ER although he yielded 8 hits. Nova walked 2 and struck out 4.

At the plate: Winfree ended up 1-for-3 with his game-winning HR and 2 RBI.

On Deck: Gwinnett continues their series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. in the third game of a four-game series at Coolray Field. LHP Jo-Jo Reyes (0-2, 4.97 ERA) will start for the Braves, while the Yankees will send RHP Jason Hirsh (4-5, 4.42 ERA). The game will be broadcast on WDUN-550 AM.
