Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped game two of their four game series with the Durham Bulls 8-1 Saturday night at Alliance Bank Stadium.
The Bulls started the scoring with a four-run second inning. A Dan Johnson single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for outfielder Desmond Jennings with one out. Jennings hit a grounder to shortstop Pedro Lopez, who tossed it home to Devin Ivany. The shortstop's throw got away from Ivany, allowing Johnson to score Durham's first run of the game. The next batter, Jose Lobaton, ripped a double down the left field line, extending the Bulls lead to 3-0. Shortstop J.J. Furmaniak concluded the scoring by lifting a fly ball to deep right. Chiefs outfielder Justin Maxwell made the catch on the warning track but it was hit deep enough for Lobaton to tag up from third and score Durham's fourth run of the inning. Durham ended up sending eight hitters to the plate in the frame.
The Bulls also added runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to increase their lead to 8-1. Durham third baseman Dan Johnson, who came into the game with 47 RBI (second best in the International League), went 3-4 with two doubles. He was also intentionally walked once. Chris Richard contributed to the Bulls offense with a 2-4 performance, raising his batting average to .325 for the season.
The Chiefs scored their only run of the game in the second inning on Justin Maxwell's solo home run over the 375 foot marker out in right center field. The long-ball was Maxwell's first in 21 games for Syracuse.
A night after being shut out, the Chiefs managed five hits all night against Durham pitching. Heath Phillips tossed six innings for the win. The lefthander threw 94 pitches and allowed only one hit and one run.
Jeff Mandel suffered his first loss as a Chief. He went four innings, giving up six hits and six runs, three of which were earned, while striking out three. Mandel also walked three batters.
The Chiefs and Bulls will face off again Sunday in game three of the series. The pitching matchup will be Syracuse's Shairon Martis (2-4, 4.80) against Aneury Rodriguez (2-3, 3.57). First pitch will be at 5:00.
