Gwinnett Stripers News Release
AWRENCEVILLE, GA. - Left-hander Yohan Flande turned in five scoreless innings and Joey Terdoslavich homered as part of a three-run first inning as the Gwinnett Braves notched their sixth-straight win in shutout fashion, 5-0 over the Durham Bulls on Saturday night. Jordan Parraz homered as well, helping the G-Braves to a 3-0 start at Coolray Field this season.
The G-Braves struck early against Bulls' right-hander Matt Torra, scoring three times in the first and never trailing. Jose Constanza reached on a one-out walk and stole second, but was hung up in a rundown between second and third after a comebacker to the mound by Drew Sutton. Ernesto Mejia followed with a double over the head of Bulls' left-fielder Brandon Guyer, sending Sutton home. The very next batter was Terdoslavich, who sent a high fly ball off the top of the right-field wall and over for his second home run of the season. The blast scored himself and Mejia, raising the lead to 3-0.
Three runs would prove to be more than Flande (W, 1-0) would need. The left-hander kept his ERA at 0.00 as he allowed just three hits - all singles - over five frames. The lefty walked two and struck out four, extending his scoreless streak to 9.0 innings.
Parraz extended the lead with a solo shot to left in the fourth inning, his first home run with Gwinnett. Jose Yepez doubled home Josh Wilson for the fifth and final run in the sixth inning.
Left-hander Dusty Hughes kept the shutout in-tact over 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings, and right-hander Cory Gearrin finished off the game with three strikeouts over 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings. Flande, Hughes and Gearrin combined on a three-hit shutout, Gwinnett's third of the season. The club also threw a combined two-hit shutout in Flande's previous start, April 9 at Norfolk.
Torra (L, 1-1) yielded five runs on 11 hits over 5.2 innings for the Bulls. Right-hander Brandon Gomes and left-hander Adam Liberatore combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Terdoslavich finished 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Parraz went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Mejia doubled twice, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Yepez finished 3-for-4 with a double and RBI as well.
Jeff Salazar had two of the three hits on the night for Durham, going 2-for-4 with two singles.
The Gwinnett Braves (7-3) complete the four-game series with the Durham Bulls (5-5) with day baseball at Coolray Field on Sunday, first pitch scheduled for 2:05 PM. Right-hander Todd Redmond (1-0, 1.80) is slated to make his third start for the G-Braves, while the Bulls will counter with right-hander Alex Cobb (0-1, 2.25). Listen to the game on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
Sunday is "All About Kids" day at Coolray Field, as well as another Family Sunday featuring pregame catch in the outfield and a post-game base-run for kids 12 and under. It's also "Jackie Robinson Day" as the Gwinnett Braves will honor the legend by retiring his No. 42.
Tickets for all Gwinnett Braves home games are on sale now at the Coolray Field Box Office. Call (678) 277-0340 or visit gwinnettbraves.com for more information.
