Future Steelheads: Alex Way

With the 165th pick in the 9th round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection the Mississauga Steelheads welcomed left winger Alex Way as one of the newest members of the organization.

The winger from Ottawa, Ontario spent this past season playing his minor hockey in his hometown with the Ottawa Jr. 67's in the HEO. Standing at 5'8 and 147 lbs, Alex's quickness and ability to make plays with the puck were attributes that caught the eye of the Steelheads' staff.

In 30 regular season games with the Jr. 67's Alex averaged almost two points a night with his total of 30 goals and 29 assists. His knack for creating scoring opportunities continued into the post season where in 11 playoff games he scored another 6 goals and 11 assists. His offensive performance was recognized by the Jr. 67's as he was named the Minor Midget Offensive Player of the Year at the team's end of the year banquet.

Alex lead the Jr. 67's to a semi-final appearance in this year's OHL Cup where he helped the team to a 4-2 record. In 6 tournament games Alex averaged over a point per game scoring 3 goals and 6 assists.

Following the OHL Cup, Alex was able to participate in this year's OHL Gold Cup where he participated as a member of Team HEO. The team finished the tournament with a record of 3-2-0-0 where Alex stood out as one of the team's top players.

He finished the tournament with a total of 5 goals and 2 assists, tying him for second on the team in goals and points. He finished the tournament tied for third overall in goals and tied for fourth overall in points.

Alex was only the second winger selected by the Steelheads at the Priority Selection behind Tyler Kleine. Alex will be part of a growing core group of Steelheads forwards looking to make an impact and an impression when training camp kicks off later this month.
