Fort Wayne Fusion News Release

Excitement and tension ran high on Ford Fusion field at Memorial Coliseum Friday night as the Fort Wayne Fusion kicked off their inaugural season on Friday night, playing an exhibition game in front of more than 2,000 fans against a fellow expansion team, the Mahoning Valley Thunder.

The evening began with the two teams taking part in 1-on-1 and 3-on-3 position drills for 60 minutes. While this was meant to help the players warm up after several days of light contact drills in training camp, it also gave them a chance to put some hard hits on each other. A few scrapes ensued, but the players got down to business in short order with the fans fully into the action.

After the teams finished with the scrimmage, Fusion fans were treated to a "half-game" by the teams. This consisted of two full periods being played as though it were a regular season game. The game was complemented by many different fan-involved contests, such as the Dress-Up Race and the Touchdown Dance competition, as well as several performances by the brand new Energy Dance Team. The highlight of the evening was a pair of trip giveaways, one to Las Vegas and the other to Orlando. The Fusion looks to top it by giving away a Ford Fusion at their home opener on March 31st against the Green Bay Blizzard.

In the end, the Thunder won the half-game 14-13 after the Fusion missed a PAT following their late second-quarter touchdown. The fans did not seem disappointed, as the spirited crowd was excited to see what lies ahead this season.
