Fury FC to Face Halifax in Canadian Championship Qualifying Round 3
June 12, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA - Two previous rounds of qualifying in the Battle of the North wrapped up on Wednesday night with Ottawa Fury FC learning it will face Canadian Premiere League (CanPL) Halifax Wanderers as its first 2019 Canadian Championship opponent. Fury FC will travel to Halifax on July 10 before hosting the Wanderers in the return leg on Wednesday, July 24 at TD Place (KO 7:30 p.m., live on OneSoccer.ca).
Canada Soccer's professional club championship, the 2019 Canadian Championship, kicked off on May 15 with an expanded 13 team, 24-match competition format. Teams from League1 Ontario (L1O), Première ligue de soccer du Québec (PLSQ), United Soccer League (USL) Championship, Major League Soccer (MLS) and, for the first time, the Canadian Premier League (CanPL) are participating in the five-round competition.
Ottawa will face the Halifax Wanderers team led by former national team manager Stephen Hart. Halifax had the better of Winnipeg's Valour in both ties, winning at home 2-1 in the first matchup and securing the defining 2-0 win in Winnipeg on Wednesday (4-1 on aggregate).
The winner of the two-legged, home-and-away, aggregate score format qualifying round between Ottawa and Halifax will take on the defending Canadian Championship winner Toronto FC in the Semi-Final Round. The winner will hoist the Voyageurs Cup after the second leg of the Final Round scheduled for 25 September and earn a berth the 2020 Concacaf Champions League.
Until then, Fury FC has a busy month of June ahead, starting with a Saturday evening (June 15) matchup against expansion club Memphis 901 FC and a Tuesday, June 18 showcase against MLS club Montreal Impact, who once again visit the capital for the CapCity Cup. Ottawa is on an unbeaten streak since April 20 and will look to continue climbing the rankings in USL Championship action.
