Fury FC Fall to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC at Home

August 30, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release

OTTAWA - Ottawa Fury FC fell at home to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC by a score of 4-0 at TD Place Friday evening. Three unanswered goals in the first half from the Riverhounds was enough to snap Fury FC's unbeaten streak at home.

It was a fast start for the visitors, who struck in the third minute when former Fury FC striker Steevan Dos Santos opened the scoring with a low shot. Dos Santos's strike partner, Neco Brett, doubled the Pittsburgh advantage less than ten minutes later. Brett added another goal before the end of the first half, making it 3-0.

Fury FC showed good resilience, coming out strong in the second half, notching three-times as many shots as during the first 45 minutes. Defensively, Ottawa stifled the Pittsburgh attack, while they were able to pressure the opposition backline. Hadji Barry had a good chance at the side of the goal, forcing a desperation block from a Riverhounds defender. The Riverhounds would add another goal late to make the final score 4-0.

Ottawa Fury FC will now embark on a road trip that sees them play three games in eight days. They will return to TD Place on Wednesday, September 18 to face the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

STORYLINES

This was Fury FC's first home loss in USL action since their defeat against Nashville SC in the home opener on April 6.

Former Fury FC striker Steevan Dos Santos started for Pittsburgh. He spent two seasons in Ottawa (2017-18).

Friday was Christiano François's final game before he leaves on international duty. He will represent Haiti for two games in CONCACAF Nations Cup qualifying.

POST-GAME COMMENTS

Head Coach Nikola Popovic

"This team showed that they have good character, even when things don't go well. We have to learn from the mistakes. In the second half, we raised our level. If we had the same second half as the first, I think we could have been in the game. However, what happened in the third minute and the eleventh minute put us in a situation that was difficult to recover from."

Defender Carl Haworth

"We know it was some individual errors in key areas and key moments of the game - it played right into their hands. There were things we did well today, as well. We can regroup, refocus and head into this road trip with a clean slate."
