Fury Extinguish Soles, Remain in Playoff Hunt

February 21, 2016 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Ontario Fury News Release

The Ontario Fury, Driven by Mark Christopher Chevrolet, took control of its own playoff destiny Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Pacific Division-leading Soles de Sonora 7-4 before 4,381 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Mauricio Salles recorded a hat trick and Juan Topete had two goals and two assists as the Fury (11-7) handed Sonora just its third loss of the season (16-3).

Ontario moved a half-game behind Tacoma for second place in the Pacific Division with the win, with one game in hand over the Stars, which will be played Wednesday evening at Citizens Business Bank Arena against the Turlock Express. San Diego, playing late Sunday, is also in the mix for one of the final two playoff spots from the Pacific Division. An Ontario win Wednesday would leave the Fury tied with Tacoma, with the two teams meeting Friday at the Showare Center in Kent, Wash., in a game that will determine the final playoff spot. Ontario currently holds the tiebreaker on the Stars, as Ontario beat Tacoma 9-6 in December.

The Fury scored the first four goals of the game Sunday, as Salles opened the scoring converting a restart pass from Lucio Gonzaga just 3:16 into the game. Topete doubled the lead 1:20 later as he slid a pass from goaltender Sanaldo past Diego Reynoso for the 2-0 lead. Ontario led 5-1 at half, and had a 5-2 lead after three quarters.

Salles scored 44 seconds into the final quarter to complete his hat trick, and Lucio Gonzaga scored into a vacated net with 1:20 to go to ice the game.

Ontario blocked 14 shots in the game, holding Sonora to its lowest goal output of the season. Sanaldo made 11 saves for the win for Ontario. Reynoso made 14 stops in the loss.

The Fury finish out their regular season home schedule Wednesday night as they host the Turlock Express at 7 p.m. Tickets for the game, which start at $10, are on sale at the Citizens Business Bank Arena box office and online at AXS.com.

Season ticket packages for the 2016-17 season are also on sale now. New season ticket packages purchased before Wednesday's game will include Wednesday's game, 20 group tickets for use either this season or next season and an early bird gift.
