Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash - The Everett AquaSox (3-6) attempted to rally back from an early 4-0 hole to the Eugene Emeralds (7-2) but came up 90 feet from forcing extra innings, losing the series opener of the three-game set with the division rival, their fifth loss in the last six games.
Left-hander Jordan Shipers (0-2, 7.88) was attributed the loss for Frogs allowing just one earned run, but made a costly two-error play that led to three unearned Emerald runs in the second inning. Shipers struck out seven in 4.1 innings, and gave up his only earned run of the game on a solo home run by Eugene first baseman Daniel Garce in fourth inning to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Eugene starter Colin Rea (1-0, 2.00 ERA) threw five shutout innings, becoming the third straight opposing starter to hold the Frogs scoreless in at least four innings of work, while striking out six and allowing just three hits. When Rea was taken out after the fifth, the Sox capitalized with a two-out three-run homer by catcher Mike Dowd, which broke Everett's 17-inning scoreless streak.
The Emeralds responded with an insurance run in the next half inning on a two-out single to left by second baseman Cory Spangenberg. The Sox got a rally going in the ninth inning with a one-out double by center-fielder Jarrett Burgess, who was plated home on a two-out single by Marcus Littlewood, a single that could have tied the game but left-fielder was caught stealing second on a close play during Littlewood's at-bat.
After a two-out single by third baseman Danny Lopez, the AquaSox had runners on second and third with two outs down a run, but designated hitter James Wood was called out on strikes to end the game. Everett was 2-9 with runners in scoring position for the game and left nine on base.
The Sox look to stop the losing streak when they send out left-hander Bennett Whitmore (0-0, 1.80 ERA), who allowed just one run in his first start of the season on the road at Tri-City. Whitmore will match up against Emeralds right-hander Leonel Campos (0-0, 18.00 ERA) in the first home afternoon game at 1:05 p.m.
